September 26, 2026 – The Substance Abuse Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released a new publication: “Current Research, Regulatory, and Policy Considerations Regarding Psychedelics as Medicine“. Psychedelic-assisted therapy is moving from research settings toward clinical practice faster than most observers anticipated even five years ago. Psychedelics are compounds that produce marked changes in perception, mood, thought, and sense of self. Emerging science suggests potential therapeutic benefit for some psychedelic-assisted therapies for a variety of different conditions, including major depressive disorder and substance use disorders.
This technical assistance paper provides an overview of the advances in the use of psychedelics as medicine, as well as research needs, safety considerations, and the system growth needed to support them. A copy of the report can be found here.
