Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has published a guidance reminding pharmacies that they can dispense medication pursuant to a paper prescription or facsimile if needed due to a cyberattack. This guidance was published in response to the recent cyberattack on a health care organization that led to the organization shutting down its electronic prescribing system. As of March 2024, the impacted health care organization has launched a new iteration of its electronic prescribing service, which is operational, and “prescriptions (controlled and non-controlled) are being transmitted electronically with minimal issues.” However, DEA notes that electronic prescribing of controlled substances (CS) is not required. Prescribing practitioners can still provide oral, paper-based, and facsimile prescriptions according to the CS schedule.
